What does progress look like in Pilates and Yoga? Why is it different from person to person? Why on some days do we feel like we make progress and other days we feel like we go backwards?

When I think of the word progress all of these questions come to mind. Perhaps you have similar questions, especially when it is a new training regime.

Lets break things down so…

What does progress look like in Pilates and Yoga:

Progress in Yoga reveals itself in the ability to remain focused in meditation, an improvement in lung capacity in pranayama, increased flexibility in postures and a stamina to remain in yoga asana.

Why is progress different from person to person?

Progress can be seen physically, mentally and emotionally. Perhaps you may notice increased motivation or a better ability to fall asleep at bedtime but you feel like your jeans are still too tight, don’t beat yourself up about this. Focus on the areas you have made progress in and celebrate this. Keep moving forward. Sometimes progress reveals itself in all areas for example you feel happy with your body, you feel positive about your training and you feel driven to reach your goals. Some days you may feel you have made progress in just one area, you have had an amazing session where you feel your Pilates is outstanding but you wake up with tight glutes and sore calf muscles. Well you have made progress, celebrate your form focus and remember you only improve your strength in Pilates by ensuring you keep up a regular practice.

Why on some days do we feel like we make progress and other days we feel like we go backwards?

Changes in weather, energy levels, hormones, emotions, stress, are all things we deal with on a day to day basis. Some people have stronger immunities, some people are more resilient to stressors and soldier on, no matter where you fall on the spectrum as long as you keep moving forward and remain disciplined and dedicated to your health and well-being you are making progress.

‘Remember success is steady progress towards ones personal goals so keep at it no matter what’!
